Step 1 — Pull Over Safely

The moment you suspect a flat tyre while driving, reduce speed gradually and steer smoothly toward the side of the road. Avoid harsh braking — a flat tyre can cause the vehicle to pull strongly to one side, and sudden braking amplifies this. Activate your hazard lights immediately so other road users can see you.

Choose a safe stopping point — ideally a car park, lay-by, or driveway rather than the edge of a busy road. On a motorway, make for the hard shoulder or the nearest Emergency Refuge Area. Once stopped, apply the handbrake and leave hazard lights on.

Step 2 — Assess the Damage

Once safely stopped, check which tyre is flat and assess the damage. Look for the cause — a nail or screw embedded in the tread, a sidewall cut or bulge, or evidence of impact damage. Don't touch any embedded object; removing it before a repair can cause immediate full deflation.

If the flat tyre is on a safe, well-lit location and you have a spare tyre plus the correct tools, you may be able to change it yourself. If you're on a motorway, in an unsafe location, or don't have a spare, call for emergency mobile tyre fitting immediately.
