The Legal Minimum Tyre Tread Depth in the UK

Driving on illegal tyres can cost you £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. Here's exactly what the UK law says about tyre tread depth and how to stay legal.

What Is the Legal Tyre Tread Depth in the UK?

The legal minimum tyre tread depth in the UK for cars, light vans, and light trailers is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread width and around the entire circumference of the tyre. This is set by UK Regulation 27 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.

For motorcycles over 50cc, the limit is also 1.6mm. For mopeds and motorcycles under 50cc, the legal requirement is simply that the tyre must not be worn smooth — there is no specified depth, but any visible tread must be present.

What Are the Penalties for Illegal Tyres?

If you're caught driving on a tyre below the legal tread depth limit, you can receive a fixed penalty of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on your licence per offending tyre. If all four tyres are illegal, that's a potential 12 penalty points — which would mean a driving ban.

Beyond the legal penalties, illegal tyres can also invalidate your car insurance. If you're involved in an accident with illegal tyres, your insurer may refuse to pay out — leaving you personally liable for all costs.
