Run Flat Tyres: Everything You Need to Know

Run flat tyres let you keep driving after a puncture — but they're not indestructible. Here's how run flats work, how far you can drive on them, and when they need replacing.

How Do Run Flat Tyres Work?

Run flat tyres (RFTs) are constructed with reinforced sidewalls that support the vehicle's weight even when the tyre loses air pressure. Standard tyres collapse immediately when punctured; run flat tyres remain structurally intact, allowing you to continue driving to a safe location or a tyre fitting centre.

Most vehicles fitted with run flat tyres as standard also have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to alert the driver when pressure drops. Without TPMS, you might not know you have a puncture, as the handling change is subtle at low speeds.

How Far Can You Drive on a Run Flat Tyre?

Run flat tyres are generally rated to allow continued driving for up to 50 miles at a maximum speed of 50mph after a puncture. These limits exist because driving on a flat run flat generates heat that degrades the rubber and structural reinforcement over time.

Exceeding these limits risks catastrophic tyre failure. Always check your vehicle handbook for manufacturer-specific guidance, as limits can vary by brand and vehicle type.

Can Run Flat Tyres Be Repaired?

In most cases, run flat tyres cannot be repaired after a puncture. Because the tyre has been driven on without air pressure, the internal structure — including the reinforced sidewall — may be compromised even if there is no visible external damage. Most manufacturers and tyre specialists recommend replacement rather than repair.

At Easy Mobile Tyres, our technicians will assess your run flat tyre and give you an honest recommendation. We carry run flat tyre sizes for popular models and can fit a replacement at your location. Call us for availability and pricing.
