Tread Depth Below the Legal Limit
The legal minimum tyre tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Most new tyres come with around 8mm of tread. Once depth drops below 3mm, braking performance degrades significantly — especially in wet conditions. You can check tread depth with a 20p coin: if the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted into the tread, your tyres are likely below the legal limit.
Driving on illegal tyres can result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. But more importantly, worn tyres dramatically increase your stopping distance and risk of aquaplaning. Book a mobile tyre fitting service the moment you notice low tread depth.
Visible Cracks, Bulges or Sidewall Damage
Cracks in the tyre sidewall are a sign of rubber degradation, often caused by UV exposure, ozone or simply age. Bulges or blisters on the sidewall indicate internal structural damage, typically from hitting a pothole or kerb. These are serious safety hazards — a bulge means the tyre could blow out at any moment.
If you notice any sidewall damage, do not drive on the tyre. Call for emergency mobile tyre fitting immediately. Even a short journey on a structurally compromised tyre can result in a dangerous blowout at speed.
Vibration or Poor Handling
Unusual vibration through the steering wheel or a drifting sensation when driving straight can indicate tyre problems. These symptoms might point to uneven tyre wear, an out-of-balance wheel, or internal tyre damage. Wheel balancing alongside a tyre replacement can often resolve these issues.
Don't ignore handling changes — they nearly always signal something is wrong. Our mobile tyre fitting teams can inspect your full set of tyres at your location and advise on replacements or balancing as needed.
