Step 1: Check the Tread Depth
Start with tread depth. Use a 20p coin or a tread depth gauge to check the main tread grooves at multiple points around each tyre. The legal minimum is 1.6mm — but replace at 3mm for optimal safety. Also check that wear is even across the tyre width; uneven wear may indicate an alignment or suspension issue.
Check all four tyres, including the spare if your vehicle has one. Spare tyres are often forgotten but can let you down at the worst moment if they're below legal depth.
Step 2: Check Tyre Pressure
Using a pressure gauge (or the machine at a petrol station), check all four tyres against the recommended pressures in your vehicle handbook. Check tyres when cold — before you've driven more than a mile or two. Note that the recommended pressure may differ between front and rear tyres, and may increase when the vehicle is heavily loaded.
While you're checking pressure, check that the valve caps are in place. Missing valve caps allow dirt and moisture to enter the valve, potentially causing slow pressure loss.
Step 3: Visual Inspection
Walk around the vehicle and visually inspect each tyre for cuts, cracks, bulges, embedded objects (nails, screws), or abnormal wear patterns. Pay particular attention to the sidewalls — damage here cannot be repaired and the tyre must be replaced.
Check for any objects embedded in the tread. A screw or nail doesn't always cause an immediate flat — it may be holding itself in, causing a slow puncture. Don't try to remove it yourself as this may cause sudden deflation. Call Easy Mobile Tyres for a mobile puncture assessment.
How Often Should You Check Your Tyres?
We recommend a full tyre safety check at least once a month and before any long journey. Many breakdowns and accidents involving tyre failure could have been prevented with a routine inspection just days earlier.
If you notice anything unusual — vibration, pulling to one side, unusual noise, or warning lights — have your tyres inspected immediately. Easy Mobile Tyres can carry out a full tyre inspection at your location and advise on any work needed.
