Wheel Balancing Explained: Why It Matters for Your Car

Wheel balancing is often overlooked, but poorly balanced wheels can cause vibration, uneven tyre wear and reduced fuel efficiency. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is Wheel Balancing?

Wheel balancing is the process of equalising the weight distribution around a tyre and wheel assembly. Even small weight imbalances — as little as a few grams — can cause noticeable vibration at motorway speeds. When a new tyre is fitted, small lead or stick-on weights are placed on the rim to correct any imbalance.

Dynamic balancing (the most common method) spins the tyre on a machine to identify where weight needs to be added. Static balancing corrects imbalance on a single plane and is less common for modern vehicles.

Signs Your Wheels Need Balancing

The most obvious sign of unbalanced wheels is vibration through the steering wheel at certain speeds — typically between 50–70mph. You might also notice uneven tyre wear (cupping or scalloping on the tread surface), reduced fuel economy, and increased road noise.

Wheels can go out of balance from everyday driving — hitting potholes, driving over speed bumps too fast, or even just from the gradual wear of the balance weights falling off over time.
